SYNCHRONOUS TEACHING<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Some call it \u2018live\u2019 teaching. Synchronous activities happen during class time; or in real-time. They are essential in building a sense of community among our students, and they help us bond with them. The examples below require careful planning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Things we can do<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Warm-up activities<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Elicit and generate vocabulary lists<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Brainstorm for ideas<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Explain grammar points (briefly)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Share slides (no more than a handful)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Check reading\/listening comprehension as a group (briefly)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Provide individualized feedback to students (through Zoom chat)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Make notes on the Whiteboard (students and\/or teacher)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Watch videos\/listening exercises (if files are saved on & streamed from the computer)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Group discussions (Zoom allows for breakout rooms)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Collaborative writing (on Google docs)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Role-plays (in breakout rooms)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Mini-presentations (2-3 minutes)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Live polls\/surveys (through Zoom or\u00a0mentimeter.com<\/span><\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Meetings with invited guests<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Cultural Clubs (cooking class, music\/singing)<\/span><\/p>\n

ASYNCHRONOUS TEACHING<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Asynchronous activities do not require participants to be online simultaneously. They also require careful planning. From a student perspective, they allow for deep thinking, reflection time, and collaborative work, as well as individualized feedback. This means that students have the opportunity to produce high quality work when guided adequately.<\/span><\/p>\n

Things students can do<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Write essays, blog posts, reaction papers, a diary<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Read a novel, articles, blog or social media posts<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Watch Youtube videos, movies<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Listen to podcasts, radio interviews<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Conduct interviews with native speakers (via WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Work on video-projects (mid\/end-of-term)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Participate in forum discussions<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Video-record an oral presentation<\/span><\/p>\n

Things teachers can do<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Record & share detailed instructions related to a particular task or project<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Record & share grammatical explanations and summary videos<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 Record & share feedback that\u2019s helpful to the whole class<\/span><\/p>\n

The list is far from being comprehensive, but it hints at the many possibilities that can keep class engaging. A key component here is diversifying the type of activities and tasks that you conduct. By now, many students are tired from screen time and, in truth, 45-60 minutes of pure interaction are enough for a virtual language class. So if your typical class is longer than this, consider leaning towards asynchronous activities. It\u2019s a great way to promote learners\u2019 agency.<\/span><\/p>\n

Face-to-face classroom interaction cannot be 100% replicated in an online environment; and that\u2019s why it\u2019s essential to invest in digital actions that foster a sense of community. In addition the synchronous activities previously mentioned, having everyone\u2019s camera on seems to me crucial in creating proximity (if expectations about classroom etiquette were set early and clearly). Another thing to keep in mind is\u00a0humor<\/span><\/a>: This is an effective antidote to moments of stress, it keeps students alert, and it maintains social bonds.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of this is easy; but we are all going to take away something positive and we\u2019ll bring it back to our classrooms. At minimum, we are rethinking how we normally teach. As Arabs say \u0631\u064f\u0628\u0651 \u0636\u0627\u0631\u0651\u0629 \u0646\u0627\u0641\u0639\u0629 ; in other words, \u2018every cloud has a silver lining\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n
